Chat GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) is a cutting-edge AI model for language processing created by OpenAI. It has a wide range of applications, including language translation, language modeling, and text generation for applications such as chatbots. With 175 billion parameters, it is one of the largest and most sophisticated language-processing AI models to date. In less corporate terms, GPT gives a user the ability to give a trained AI a wide range of worded prompts. These can be questions, requests for a piece of writing on a topic of your choosing, or a huge number of other worded requests.

Seems a lot of iPhone users have been conned by an app pretending to be the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Thanks to the growing popularity of OpenAI’s bot, the imposter app managed to rank among the top apps, in the Productivity category, on the App Store in the US. As first reported by MacRumors, the app is going strong and still attracting users by the dozen.
Going by the name “ChatGPT Chat GPT AI With GPT-3,” the imposter app has managed to garner some positive reviews – over 12,000 – that add up to a rating of 4.6 out of 5 in the US. Whereas, it has a solid 4.4 out of 5 rating based on over 500 reviews in India. As a consequence, it won’t be far-fetched to assume that the app has simultaneously raked in loads of revenue as the app charges a fee of up to $49.99 for ad-free, unrestricted usage.

FAKE GPT

Developed by OpenAI on GPT-3.5, ChatGPT is an AI-powered natural language processing tool that enables you to have conversations with a chatbot surprisingly like a human. Additionally, the language processing tool is capable of answering your questions, writing essays, emails, and coding. ChatGPT is

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, it doesn’t change the fact that the developer of this imposter app, “Social Media Apps & Game Sports health Run Hiking Running fitness tracking,” has nothing to do with OpenAI. On the contrary, it is just unethically cashing in on ChatGPT’s fame.

While the positive reviews paint the ChatGPT copycat in high regard, the negative reviews unfurl the truth. The critics have highlighted how the chatbot fails to answer certain questions despite it supposedly operating on artificial intelligence. A review mentioned that, while it can summarize the answer to straightforward questions well, it fails miserably at solving complicated problems, which is very unlike an AI chatbot.

As the world experimented with OpenAI chatbot service that generated amusing results for some, Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said after he “learned” that OpenAI was accessing the micro-blogging platform’s database for “training”, he put a pause on it. Another review pointed out that there was no option, within the app, to cancel the trial subscription. This makes it virtually impossible for the user to avoid being charged once the trial period expires.

Interestingly, the sketchy developer only has 2 other apps on the store, both with little to no user interaction. In other words, the ChatGPT imposter is the developer’s only app with a significant user base.

Beware, many more copycat apps on the Play Store

Apple prides itself on the App Store’s stringent approach to moderation and privacy. However, it has been struggling to deal with shady apps for a while now as is evident when an app, clearly imitating another entity, manages to stay up long enough to gain such massive traction. In fact, this isn’t the only app using the “ChatGPT” name to fool unsuspecting users – several imposter apps are live on the App Store.
